Gombehabba I visited this year
In one of my recent posts, I have shared about the places , where the dolls for gombehabba are available. Gombehabba , is the tradition of exhibiting dolls during Dasara festival. This is celebrated in South India and some parts of Maharashtra.Every year I get an invitation to visit gombehabba. Last year , as a judge to a contest of exhibition, I could visit many houses to see gombehabba. I have shared about the unique dolls I saw there. This year , I visited gombehabba arranged in Untitled space, at JP Nagar, Bangalore. I came to know about the event through a FB post.
When I visited, the host Anu, welcomed me with a friendly smile and showed the arrangements of dolls. She explained specialty of some dolls. They have a very good collection of dolls. Anu told me that, some dolls are more than 40 years old.
The dolls were arranged in a room , in three coloumns ,
In the middle, traditional dolls, idols of Hindu mythological charecters arranged in steps,
On the left miniatures were arranged-miniatures of tea sets, charaka, bicycle etc
On the right , some traditional dolls from Rajasthan were arranged
In front of these , some themes , like village life, zoo , seller selling many items…..
There were some unique dolls , which attracted me.
This one- is from Africa
These are from Assam:
This a cute, big dolls , with all ornaments and wearing a saree :). This looks little bride.
These are wooden painted dolls. The two owls are from Japan.
Very cute dolls!! Not only these dolls, the friendly nature of the host, her interest in showing these dolls impressed me a lot. She explained me, most of these dolls are collected by her mother. Appreciate her interest in the tradition. Slowly people are loosing interest in such tradition. To make the next generation to understand and follow these tradition, she allowed her little daughter to arrange few dolls. Here is what her daughter arranged:
Hope with these kind of little efforts, our traditions will be transferred to the next generations.
In the next posts, will share about some online shops , where you can buy dolls for Gombehabba
