Work in Progress Wednesday – Saree Design with Kalamkari Patches
Every Wednesday, I love sharing my ongoing projects as part of my Work in Progress Wednesday series. This week, I am excited to show you a new saree design I have been working on. It’s still in progress, but I couldn’t resist sharing a glimpse of it with you all!

The saree with patchwork
About this Kalamakari Patches:
What makes this project even more special is that these patches were gifted to me by a dear friend. Adding them into my saree design feels like stitching together not just fabric, but also memories and bonds of friendship.
What are Kalamkari Patches?
Kalamkari is one of the oldest forms of hand-painted and block-printed textile art from India. The word “Kalamkari” comes from two Persian words – kalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship). Traditionally, Kalamkari art is created using natural dyes and involves intricate motifs inspired by mythology, nature, and folk stories.
When these designs are adapted into Kalamkari patches, they become versatile pieces that can be appliquéd onto fabrics like sarees, dupattas, blouses, or even quilts. Each patch carries the essence of this age-old craft, with motifs often featuring peacocks, flowers, creepers, and mythological figures.
Why Kalamkari Patches in Saree Design?
Using Kalamkari patches in saree design is a wonderful way to combine heritage art with modern fashion. These patches instantly add character, contrast, and a handcrafted touch. Whether arranged as scattered motifs, borders, or bold centerpieces, they enhance the richness of the drape.
In this project, I am appliquéing the gifted Kalamkari patches onto a vibrant pink saree. The earthy tones of the Kalamkari motifs stand out beautifully against the silk fabric, creating a balance between traditional elegance and contemporary design.
I have attached the border and attaching the motifs now. I have already designed two or three such sarees, one with Pen Kalamkari patches. What I love most about this project is the emotional value. Since the patches were gifted, this saree won’t just be another craft piece—it will always remind me of the thoughtfulness and encouragement from a friend. To me, that’s the true charm of handmade work: it carries stories, emotions, and bonds stitched within every design.
Love, Laugh and Live the life to the fullest,
