Decoupage on Boxes – My Latest Work-in-Progress Transformation
Decoupage has always been one of my favourite ways to transform plain wooden surfaces into something elegant, vintage, and truly handmade. This week, I started working on a charming set of three wooden boxes, and I wanted to share my work in progress with you all. If you are someone who loves experimenting with decoupage on boxes, you will enjoy this journey that blends colours, patterns, and creativity.
This is a set of 3 boxes, which can be kept one above the other.

Choosing the Napkins – Birds, Florals & Vintage Frames
The first step of any decoupage project begins with choosing the right tissues. For this set, I selected beautiful napkins with:
- Colourful birds
- Soft florals
- Ornamental vintage frames
- Lovely pastel tones
- Script backgrounds and butterflies
These motifs immediately reminded me of shabby-chic décor—something perfect for jewellery boxes, keepsake boxes, or even gifting.
We can buy the decoupage tissues on itsy bitsy.
The napkins complement each other beautifully, making them perfect for creating a coordinated set.

Preparing the Boxes – Primer & Base Coat
The three wooden boxes came in their raw finish, so I started by applying two coats of white acrylic gesso. This helps:
-
Smooth the surface
-
Provide an even base
-
Ensure the tissue prints remain bright
-
Give a clean background for blending colours
Each box was sanded lightly between coats to achieve a smooth finish. After the primer dried, the boxes already looked neat and ready for the next steps.
Planning the Layout – Which Tissue Goes Where?
Before sticking anything, I always place the tissues on the boxes to visualise the final look. Here’s how I approached it:
-
The largest box will carry the bold bird motif with pink roses
-
The medium box will showcase the vintage frame design
-
The smallest box will feature the bright yellow and black bird with the text “Nature”
This coordinated yet varied look will make the three boxes a perfect set.
