DIY Decoupage Wooden Drawer Box – Beautiful Handmade Storage Box Makeover
Why I Chose This Wooden Drawer Box
As a craft enthusiast, I can never have enough storage boxes! Whether they are made of wood, plastic, or metal, I always find myself buying them to organize my ever-growing collection of craft supplies. I’m sure fellow crafters will relate—threads, ribbons, paints, brushes, beads, embellishments, and countless other materials all need a proper place.
This wooden drawer box was one such purchase. With a spacious top compartment and two convenient drawers, it is perfect for storing embroidery threads, small craft tools, embellishments, and other supplies. While it was functional as it was, I wanted to give it a personal touch. So, I decided to transform this plain wooden box into a charming decoupage storage box that is both practical and beautiful.
Decoupage on the Wooden Drawer Box
Wooden boxes have always been my favorite surface for decoupage. The smooth wooden finish provides an excellent base for applying decoupage papers, making it easy to achieve a neat and professional look. Whether you use tissue decoupage paper or regular decoupage paper, wooden surfaces beautifully showcase the intricate designs and vibrant colors.
The moment I saw this wooden drawer box, I knew it would make a perfect decoupage project. Its spacious top compartment and two drawers offered plenty of space to decorate with floral and bird motifs while also serving as a practical storage solution for my craft supplies. Transforming this plain wooden box into a decorative organizer was both enjoyable and satisfying.
Choosing the Decoupage Design
When decorating a larger object, a single decoupage paper is often not enough to cover the entire surface. In such cases, using multiple decoupage papers is the best option. To achieve a balanced and harmonious look, it is generally recommended to choose papers that either follow the same theme or share a similar color palette.
For this wooden drawer box, I combined both approaches. In some areas, I used floral and bird motifs from the same theme, while in other areas, I selected papers with matching colors to create a seamless blend. This combination gave the box a cohesive appearance while adding visual interest from every angle.

The drawers final look
Designing the Wooden Drawer Box
The top of the drawer box features two beautiful decoupage designs—a bird with an elegant cage and a vintage lady. I first chose the bird and cage motif because I loved its delicate look. To complement its soft pink shades, I selected a tissue paper featuring a vintage lady in similar colors. The two designs blended beautifully and gave the top of the box a balanced appearance.
had chosen bird-themed decoupage papers for my wooden box projects. I still had a few pieces left over from one of my earlier projects, so instead of letting them go to waste, I decided to use them here. It was a great way to make use of every beautiful scrap.
To create a pleasing contrast with the pink decoupage papers, I painted parts of the box with light blue chalk paint. The soft blue not only balances the warm pink tones but also adds a fresh, vintage charm to the finished drawer box.

Decorating the Front of the Drawer Box
The front of the box was a little different because it contains two drawers that are opened and closed frequently. I wanted to keep the decoration simple and minimal, as large decoupage motifs could wear out over time due to constant handling.
To maintain the overall theme, I once again chose a bird design for the drawer fronts. I also made use of some leftover bird-themed decoupage paper from my previous projects. It matched the rest of the box perfectly and helped me avoid wasting beautiful pieces of paper. Sometimes, even the smallest leftover scraps can add a lovely finishing touch to a project.
Using chalk paint inside the drawers:

Finishing the Inside of the Drawer Box
For the inside of the drawer box, I kept the design simple. I painted the entire interior with soft pink chalk paint and added a darker shade of pink along the edges to create a subtle contrast. The combination gives the inside a neat and elegant finish while complementing the decoupage designs on the outside.
I enjoy working with chalk paints for decoupage projects because they provide excellent coverage, a smooth matte finish, and are available in a wide range of beautiful colors. They blend perfectly with vintage-style decoupage designs.
With its fresh makeover complete, this wooden drawer box is now ready to take its place in my craft room. It will not only help me organize my craft supplies but also add a charming decorative touch to my creative workspace.
