Beautiful Kurti Neckline Design with Tatting Lace and Hand Embroidery
Have you ever thought of combining two different art forms to create something unique? Sometimes, experimenting with different techniques brings unexpected and beautiful results. I love trying such combinations in my craft projects. Earlier, I designed a dupatta with tatting and fabric painting, and a saree with tatting and hand embroidery. I was delighted with how both turned out.
Among these, tatting and embroidery remain my favourite combination. The delicate lace patterns of tatting blend beautifully with colourful embroidery stitches. We can create floral designs with vines, add handmade tatting flowers, and connect them using simple stitches like the running stitch.
For this kurti, I used the same idea to create a colourful neckline design. The combination of intricate tatting lace and simple hand embroidery gives an ordinary kurti a distinctive handmade touch.

The kurti neck design
The neck design:
The kurti neck design has tatting as vines. And small tatted flower in between. On the neck edge I designed with simple buttonhole stitch and the French knot. I sketched the design on the paper first and then decided placement of tatting lace and embroidery.

The closer view of the neck design
For tatting I have used Anchor tatting thread tkt no 20 and for embroidery anchor skeins.
The tatting lace itself looks beautiful, but I wanted to enhance it further with hand embroidery. I added simple embroidery stitches around the tatting motifs to give the design a more complete look. The colourful threads complement the delicate lace and make the neckline more attractive.
What I love about this combination is that we don’t need complicated embroidery stitches to create an elegant design. Even simple stitches, when arranged creatively, can make a big difference. The tatting lace adds texture, while the embroidery brings the entire design together.
The color combination:
Choosing colours is always one of my favourite parts of designing a dress. For this kurti, I wanted to keep the colour combination simple but attractive. I decided to use a mix of contrasting colours and shades from the same colour family.
I have always felt that green looks lovely against an orange background. Since I was planning to create a vine design, I didn’t have to think much before choosing green for the embroidery.
For the tatting flowers, I preferred softer shades like light yellow, purple and light pink. I felt these delicate colours would balance the bright green beautifully. I also repeated the same shades in the small leaf embroidery between the flowers.
I am quite happy with how the colours have come together. Each shade has its own place in the design, yet they blend nicely without overpowering one another.
Adding Delicate Floral Motifs All Over the Kurti:

The small motifs all over Kurti
I didn’t want to limit the tatting and embroidery to just the neckline. So, I added small tatted flowers and embroidered floral motifs alternately all over the kurti. I used the same threads and colours as the neckline design to maintain a uniform look.
I love how these little flowers add charm to the fabric without making it look overcrowded. The combination of tatting and embroidery gives the kurti a delicate handmade touch.
The delicate tatting lace, colourful flowers and simple embroidery stitches have given it a lovely handmade look. I especially liked the way the neckline design blends with the small floral motifs all over the fabric. I am pairing this with Green or light yellow bottom.
