Fabric Painting for Kurtas – Simple Techniques, Stunning Results
Fabric painting is one of the most beautiful ways to transform simple clothing into unique wearable art. This kurta is a perfect example of how fabric painting on kurta can make an outfit elegant, fresh, and truly one-of-a-kind. Last post I had shared about the duppata I designed using tatting, embroidery and fabric painting.
Here is the dress I designed using fabric painting :

Design Inspiration- for fabric painting on Kurta
This is a pastel green cotton Kurta I bought from lacal market. On this I have chosen coral red and lighter sha of the same with white for flowers. For the leaves I have used sap green, mixed with Prussian Blue. The contrast of deep red against the subtle background brings out the beauty of hand-painted florals.
Here is the closer view of the motifs:

Closer view of the motif
The motif chosen for this kurta is a cluster of blooming red flowers with green leaves and tendrils. It follows a very traditional Indian fabric painting style where floral motifs symbolize freshness, growth, and femininity.
-
Flower Style: The petals are long, pointed, and layered in shades of red and pink. This creates a sense of depth and gives the flowers a natural look. The use of lighter strokes at the petal tips adds dimension and delicacy.
-
Leaves & Stems: The green leaves are painted with a mix of dark and light green, bringing contrast and balance. Curved leafy vines and tiny tendrils extend from the flowers, which softens the bold red blooms.
-
Placement: Instead of painting flowers all over, the motif is placed strategically along the hemline of the kurta. This creates a border effect, giving the outfit a grounded yet artistic look.
- Repetition: The floral motif is repeated in four clusters across the front, maintaining symmetry while still looking hand-done and unique.

The floral motif
To balance the floral deisgns along th border , I have used simple lace bought from Shriramapura cotton market. I have also designed a saree with rose deisgns. I will share in the coming posts.
