Reviving Old Sarees: Screen Printing Makeover with Elegant Paisley Motifs
Screen Printing on Sarees
Screen printing is a versatile technique in textile design. It involves creating designs using a mesh stencil, where colors are carefully pressed through to imprint the motifs onto fabric. This method allows for both precision and repetition, making it perfect for decorating sarees with uniform yet detailed patterns.
In this saree, screen printing brings out the vibrancy of multi-colored paisley motifs against the deep black base. The technique ensures sharp outlines, smooth finishes, and durability, making the motifs stand out gracefully. This is also a very old saree. I used three colored paisley designs on this saree.
Here is the saree:

Motifs used for screen printing on saree
The paisley motif (mango design) is the highlight of this saree. A blend of tradition and elegance, paisleys have been part of Indian textile heritage for centuries. Here:
-
Small scattered paisleys are placed across the body of the saree, giving it a subtle yet stylish charm.
-
Larger paisleys, intricately designed and embellished with colorful stones, are positioned along the border, enhancing its richness.
-
Multi-colored smaller motifs (in hues of turquoise, magenta, mustard, and green) create a delightful rhythm along the border, complementing the golden zari line.
The choice of motifs not only adds a decorative touch but also carries cultural symbolism – paisleys are associated with fertility, abundance, and beauty in Indian tradition.

Styling the Saree
This saree is versatile and perfect for festive as well as semi-formal occasions. The black base with a red border gives it a bold and classic appeal, while the colorful motifs add a playful twist.
-
Pairing it with a golden blouse or a red contrast blouse can elevate its festive charm.
-
Accessorize with antique gold jewelry or colorful stone-studded ornaments to match the motifs.
-
A sleek bun or braid, adorned with flowers, can enhance the traditional look.
