The Beauty of Tatted Bookmarks: A Tatting Journey with Robin Perfetti Designs
My Tatting Journey with design patterns
I have been practicing tatting for over 30 years. Over the years, I have explored this beautiful craft in my own way, designing sarees, blouses, and dresses using delicate tatted elements.
Recently, after attending the Vizag tatting meet, my perspective expanded. I felt inspired to explore other dimensions of tatting beyond wearable designs. That is when I began working on doilies, bookmarks, and other meaningful creations that showcase the versatility of this craft.
I have since created a few doilies and have now started exploring patterns from international tatting books. This journey has opened up new creative possibilities for me, allowing me to experience tatting in a completely different light.
This is one such step in my learning journey. I came across a wonderful book titled “Four Dozen Tatted Bookmarks” by Robin Perfetti, and it immediately drew my attention. The book features a wide variety of bookmark patterns, each thoughtfully designed and supported with clear instructions and beautiful visuals.
What I particularly enjoyed was how adaptable these designs are. While they are presented as bookmarks, I can already see possibilities of extending them into saree laces or decorative edgings for dresses. That flexibility makes the book even more inspiring, as it opens up creative directions beyond its original purpose.

The bookmarks
Thread selection:
For these bookmarks, I have chosen Anchor Tkt 20 threads, as I personally enjoy the structure and finish they give to tatted designs. The thickness works well for creating defined patterns while still maintaining a delicate appearance.
However, in recent times, Anchor threads have become quite expensive, and certain colors are not always easily available in the market. This can sometimes limit color choices, especially when working on creative variations.
That said, there are several alternative threads available today, especially through online stores. Exploring these options can open up new possibilities in terms of color range and accessibility, while still allowing us to achieve beautiful results in tatting.
Why I Enjoy Working with These Designs

Some more bookmarks
Starting from the very first design, each bookmark gave me an opportunity to explore different techniques in tatting. Every pattern felt like a new experience, bringing its own rhythm and character.
What I especially enjoyed is that these are small projects. They don’t take much time to complete, yet the satisfaction they offer is immense. Each finished piece feels like a complete creation in itself—delicate, detailed, and meaningful.

Some more tatted bookmarks
So far, I have created 10 bookmarks from this collection, and it has been a truly enjoyable experience. There are still 38 more patterns waiting to be explored, each one offering a new design and a fresh perspective.
I look forward to working on the remaining patterns in the coming days, and I’m excited to see how each one turns out. This feels like a journey that I want to continue, one bookmark at a time.
