Tatting on Saree Blouse: A Lotus-Themed Design for Kalamkari Elegance
When a saree carries the charm of traditional Kalamkari art, the blouse deserves to be just as special. This time, I designed a blouse that perfectly complements my Kalamkari saree—with hand-tatted lotus lace and a matching motif. If you love adding a handcrafted touch to your outfits, this post will surely inspire you. I have sahred in my one of the posts, where I have designed saree blouse with tatted lace.
Why Tatting for a Kalamkari Saree?
This is the saree for which I made a lace:

The kalamkari saree
The saree shown has a beautiful mix of lotus and leaf motifs in shades of black, grey, and magenta. To match this theme, I decided to use tatting on saree blouse, because tatting naturally creates delicate floral forms that suit Kalamkari designs wonderfully.
Instead of using machine lace, I wanted something truly handmade and unique. So I tatted the entire lace myself using Doli TKT 20 thread—a strong, smooth thread ideal for fine tatting work.To match the saree, I selected magenta and green combination in thread.
I got the blouse stitched with black panel in the back.

The blouse stitched
The blouse originally had a simple black panel in the front with a Kalamkari printed fabric on the sides. The golden border on the curves gave me the perfect frame to highlight the lace.
Tatted Lotus Lace
I created two long strips of tatted lace featuring alternating:
-
Pink lotus flowers
-
Green leafy connectors
These colors beautifully complement the shades in the Kalamkari saree. The lace forms a continuous floral vine pattern, giving the blouse a soft, elegant frame. The pattern is taken from internet.
Once the lace was ready, I hand-stitched it along the curved neckline. The delicate lotus motifs instantly enhanced the entire look of the blouse, making it stand out without overpowering the saree.
The lace I made:

Center Motif
To complete the design, I made a small tatted motif in the same lotus style. This was placed in the center of the blouse panel and embellished lightly with tiny stones for a subtle sparkle.
This small touch ties the entire design together and gives a beautifully balanced look.

Closer view of the design
Once the lace and motif were attached, the blouse transformed completely. Instead of a plain black panel, the front now looks rich, artistic, and perfectly coordinated with the Kalamkari saree.
This project is a wonderful example of how a simple blouse can be turned into a statement piece with tatting on saree blouse.
If you enjoy combining traditional textile art with your handmade crafts, do try adding tatted laces to your blouses, dupattas, or kurtis—it gives a timeless charm to any outfit.
