How I Designed a Plain Pink Saree with Decorative Laces, Sequins Lace and Tiny Motifs
Introduction
Designing a saree with decorative laces is one of the easiest and most effective ways to create a unique designer outfit. Today, the market offers a wide variety of beautiful designer laces, sequins laces, and decorative motifs in countless colours and patterns. With the right combination of fabric, laces, and embellishments, even a simple plain saree can be transformed into an elegant designer piece.
For this project, I chose a beautiful pink jute silk saree with a subtle variegated effect. To complement its rich colour, I selected decorative laces featuring different shades of pink along with contrasting accents. The addition of a delicate sequins lace and tiny motifs completed the design, giving the saree a festive and sophisticated look without making it overly ornate.
In this post, I’ll share how I designed this saree and the ideas behind selecting the laces and arranging them to achieve a balanced, handcrafted designer finish.

The pallu design
Materials Used for the Saree Design:
- Three decorative laces
- Sequins lace
- Small motifs
- Fabric glue/needle and thread
Choosing the Decorative Laces:
Since the base fabric is a beautiful variegated pink jute silk, I wanted the border to be vibrant yet elegant. As the focal element, I selected a broad decorative lace featuring floral motifs arranged inside square patterns. The lace incorporates three to four contrasting colours that beautifully complement the pink fabric, making it the perfect foundation for the design.
Although the broad lace looked attractive on its own, I felt the border needed more depth and richness to achieve the grand designer look I had envisioned. To enhance it, I selected two additional laces from my collection.
Along the outer edge of the saree, I attached a scalloped lace in shades of pink, light green, red, light blue, and yellow. The multicoloured scalloped pattern blends seamlessly with the broad floral lace, creating a sense of continuity while adding a soft decorative finish to the border.
On the inner side of the broad lace, I added a light green lace embellished with golden zari work. The fresh green shade provides a striking contrast against the pink saree, while the subtle zari detailing adds a touch of traditional elegance. Together, these three carefully chosen laces create a layered designer border that is colourful, balanced, and visually appealing.

The pallu design
I designed the pallu using a delicate sequins lace arranged in straight vertical lines. To enhance the design, I placed small motifs at regular intervals along each line. Two different types of motifs were used to create visual interest. The first is a beautiful floral-shaped Kundan motif, while the second is a handmade embellishment created by combining small sequins with tiny Kundans.
The simple sequins lines, together with the alternating motifs, create a graceful pattern that complements the colourful border without overpowering it. This minimal yet elegant design gives the pallu a festive and designer look, making the saree suitable for weddings, festivals, and other traditional occasions.
The specialty in the pleats:
One of the special features of this designer saree is the pleat design. While designing the saree, I felt that the body looked a little plain. Instead of decorating it with the usual motifs or embellishments, I wanted to create something different that would stand out without making the saree look heavy.I decided to design only the pleats by stitching delicate sequins lace along the entire length of each pleat.
When the saree is draped, these shimmering vertical lines become beautifully visible, adding elegance and a modern designer touch. The sequins lace enhances the movement of the pleats and creates a graceful visual effect, making the saree look stylish while maintaining its simplicity. This unique pleat design has become my favourite part of the saree, as it transforms a simple pink saree into a distinctive handcrafted designer creation.
