Patachitra- Some more unique designs

You must have read about my post about Patachitra. This art always mesmerizes me. Patachitras narrate stories. May be because of it’s tradition, unique way of painting (engraving with needle), colors or stories which are painted, I don’t know what attracts me , every time I get  chance to see Patachitra, I spend lot of time seeing it.

Recently in an exhibition, I saw some Patachtras were for sale. I visited that stall and there are varieties of Patachitra there. Patachtras are normally painted on palm leaves. This artist showed the patachitra which are painted on Tussar silk.

Patachitra painted on Tussar silk:

This is a patachitra painting of an elephant, with unique design. The entire elephant picture is painted using women figures(Gopikas). And Krishna and Radha sitting on the elephant. When I asked the artist he said this is another representation of Raasa Leela of Krishna.

This is also with similar concept , but here many colors are used. In the above one the prominent colors are brown and black.

The below one is painting of Krishna going to Mathura.

This one is also Krishna painting. Krishna at the centre and the Gopikas are serving him.

These are all painted on Tussar silk. Before using Tussar silk the fabric is processed using cow dung. Patachitras are also used while doing some rituals in Puri Jagannath temple.
