Traditional Kutch Embroidery on Kurti – Handmade Ethnic Dress
Traditional Kutch Embroidery on My Kurti:
Kutch work is one of my favourite forms of embroidery. Whether it is my to-do list or my ongoing projects, there will always be one or two Kutch work embroidery projects waiting to be completed. I love the beautiful geometric patterns that make this traditional Indian embroidery so special.

The dress designed with Kutchwork
This is my recently completed dress, which I designed using Kutch work and mirror work. This time, I chose a simple maroon kurti and decorated it with colourful embroidery motifs. The bright yellow and turquoise blue designs stand out beautifully against the dark maroon fabric, giving the kurti a lovely traditional look.
Traditional Kutch Embroidery Motifs on the Kurti
The main attraction of this kurti is the geometric Kutch embroidery motifs. I always love simple designs for dresses. Kutch embroidery basic motif is capable of turning the design into something very beautiful. I used two sizes of the motifs. These are basic kutch work motifs. Got it traced alternatively.
Choosing the Colours for My Kutch Work Kurti
For this dress, I chose maroon as the base colour. Maroon goes very well with bright embroidery colours. I selected yellow for the larger motifs and turquoise blue for the smaller designs. These two colours create a beautiful contrast with the maroon fabric.
I also used turquoise fabric borders on the sleeves, neckline and bottom of the kurti. These borders match the embroidery and give the dress a neat finish. I continued same pattern for the sleeves also. I had planned elbow length sleeve, but the tailor stitches it as short sleeves. But that is also looking good.
Designing the Bottom Border of the Kurti
For the bottom of the kurti, I wanted something simple that would complement the embroidery without taking attention away from the main designs.

The bottom design
I used two horizontal turquoise fabric borders at the bottom of the kurti and added small yellow circular mirrors between them. Mirror work always complements Kutch embroidery beautifully, and I love combining these two traditional embroidery techniques. The bright yellow mirror work adds a lovely decorative touch, while the turquoise borders give the dress a neat and attractive finish.
Matching Turquoise Bottom for the Ethnic Dress
I paired the maroon Kutch work kurti with a plain turquoise bottom. The turquoise colour matches the smaller embroidery motifs and the fabric borders.

Matching bottom
Since the kurti already has colourful embroidery, the plain bottom balances the overall look. This combination makes a comfortable and attractive ethnic outfit.
I am happy with the way this kurti has turned out. The traditional Kutch embroidery motifs, bright colour combination and simple borders have transformed a plain dress into a beautiful ethnic outfit.
What I like most about this dress is that the embroidery is spread across the entire kurti, yet the design does not look too heavy. The yellow motifs stand out against the maroon fabric, while the turquoise details bring the whole design together.
