Indian Folk Art Mural Depicting Friendship and Mehndi Traditions

It has been almost a month since I last published a blog post. In fact, I have hardly spent any time on my hobbies during this period. Between daily responsibilities and various commitments, my creative projects have taken a back seat.

I have also received a few screen-printing orders, but unfortunately they are still pending. Every time I look at the unfinished work, I am reminded of how much I miss sitting down with my colors, screens, and fabrics. Creative work has always been a source of joy and relaxation for me, and staying away from it for so long feels unusual.

I am now determined to get back to my creative routine, complete the pending orders, and start sharing my work here again. Sometimes life creates unavoidable pauses, but the passion for art and crafting never really disappears. I look forward to completing these projects and sharing the journey with all of you.

Story behind this folk art mural painting:

I had been longing to learn mural painting for a long time. Fortunately, I found a talented teacher who conducts mural painting classes near my home. Excited by the opportunity, I enrolled in her class and learnt this beautiful mural painting under her guidance.

The painting I made

The learning process was both enjoyable and rewarding. From understanding the basic sketch to applying colors and adding intricate details, every step helped me appreciate this traditional art form even more. This painting is one of the artworks I created during the course, and it holds a special place in my collection as it marks the beginning of my journey into mural painting.

What is Mural Painting:

Mural painting is similar to any other form of painting, except that it is traditionally created on walls or large surfaces. It has been an important part of artistic expression in many cultures around the world. Every country, and often every region within a country, has its own distinctive style of mural painting that reflects its history, culture, and traditions.

India is home to a rich variety of mural painting styles. Each region has developed unique techniques, themes, and color palettes over centuries. Some well-known examples include the vibrant Rajasthani mural paintings, known for their depiction of royal life and folk traditions, and the exquisite Kerala mural paintings, famous for their intricate details and portrayal of mythological stories. These traditional mural art forms continue to inspire artists and art enthusiasts even today.

:This mural painting depicts a serene village scene from Rajasthan, one of India’s most colorful and culturally rich states. Rajasthan is renowned for its vibrant textiles, traditional cuisine, folk art, mirror work, and architectural heritage. The state is also famous for its beautiful Lipan art, a decorative craft that combines clay and mirrors to create intricate and mesmerizing patterns.

The painting portrays two Rajasthani women seated beneath a large tree. One woman is lovingly applying mehndi (henna) to the other’s hand, capturing a moment of friendship, tradition, and celebration. Mehndi has long been an important part of Indian culture and is often associated with festivals, weddings, and joyous occasions.

The tree in the painting symbolizes life, growth, and shelter. Its broad canopy provides shade and comfort, creating a peaceful setting for the two women. The warm colors of their traditional attire, along with the tranquil village atmosphere, reflect the beauty and simplicity of rural Rajasthani life.

Through this artwork, I wanted to capture not only a traditional cultural practice but also the warmth of human relationships and the timeless charm of Rajasthan’s artistic heritage.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of creating this mural painting was working with vibrant colors. Traditional Rajasthani attire is known for its bright and cheerful color combinations, and I wanted to reflect that spirit in my artwork. For the dresses of the two women, I chose shades of yellow, red, brown, and turquoise, which bring warmth and liveliness to the composition.

To create a natural contrast, I used earthy tones for the tree, platform, and background elements. These subtle colors help highlight the brightly dressed figures while also conveying the rustic charm of a Rajasthani village setting. The combination of vibrant and earthy colors creates a balanced composition and enhances the traditional feel of the painting.

Specialty of This Mural Painting

One of the unique features of this mural painting is the three-dimensional effect created on various elements of the artwork. If you look closely, you can notice that the jewellery, decorative motifs, and patterns on the dresses stand out from the surface, giving the painting added depth and texture.

To achieve this 3D effect, I used clay to build up the jewellery and ornamental details before painting them. This technique enhances the richness of the artwork and makes the decorative elements more prominent.

Another attractive feature is the use of mirrors on the lehengas worn by the women. The mirrors reflect light beautifully and add a touch of authenticity inspired by traditional Rajasthani art forms such as Lipan art and mirror work embroidery. These textured details and mirror embellishments bring the painting to life and make it visually appealing from every angle.

I thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating this mural painting. From sketching the composition to adding colors, textures, and decorative details, every stage was a rewarding learning experience. Working on this artwork gave me a deeper appreciation for traditional Indian mural art and its intricate craftsmanship.

If I were to recreate this painting in the future, I would add more intricate mehndi patterns, richer details to the costumes, and deeper shading around the figures to create greater depth and realism. I would also experiment with additional textures and embellishments to enhance the three-dimensional effect. Every artwork teaches something new, and this painting has inspired me to continue exploring and improving my mural painting skills.
