Simple Leaf Embroidery Neck Design for Kurti with herringbone stitch
by Ranjana's Craft Blog · April 29, 2026
This kurti material was a plain fabric in a beautiful orange shade. Since the fabric itself had a bright and attractive color, I wanted to choose an embroidery design that would enhance the neckline without making it look too heavy.
I got a simple leaf design traced around the neck. Leaf motifs are usually embroidered in green shades, and green always looks beautiful on orange fabric because of the strong contrast between the two colors. The combination gives a fresh, natural, and graceful look.
I also had a few embroidery threads in different gradients of green. This design was perfect for using those shades. By using light green, olive green, dark green, and deeper green tones, the leaves got more depth and variation instead of looking flat.
The green leaf embroidery on the orange fabric made the neckline look elegant, handmade, and lively. It transformed the plain fabric into a simple but attractive kurti neck design.

Neck design with herringbone stitch
For filling leaf embroidery designs, the most commonly used stitches are herringbone stitch, satin stitch, and long and short stitch. All these stitches work beautifully for leaves, but each one gives a different effect.
For this kurti neck design, I used embroidery threads in different gradient shades of green. Because of that, I chose herringbone stitch to fill the leaves. This stitch allowed me to use the green shades effectively and gave the leaves a textured, natural look.
Another reason I chose herringbone stitch is that it creates a neat vein-like effect in the center of the leaf. This makes the leaf design look more realistic and decorative without needing extra detailing.
The herringbone stitch also helped the leaves stand out clearly on the orange fabric, giving the kurti neckline a fresh and elegant handmade look.

Color Combination for the Neck Design for Kurti:
Green is the best and most natural color choice for leaves, whether it is in painting, embroidery, or any other art form. Even a single shade of green can look beautiful for leaf motifs. But for this kurti neck embroidery design, I wanted the leaves to look more interesting and unique.
So instead of using only one green shade, I chose gradient green embroidery threads. The different green tones helped create depth and variation in the leaf design. This also made each group of leaves look slightly different, while still keeping the whole neckline design balanced.
The colors used in this embroidery design are:
- Light green
- Olive green
- Dark green
- Pink and yellow variegated thread for the small flowers
The small flowers worked as soft highlights between the leaves. The pink and yellow variegated thread added a delicate contrast to the green leaf embroidery and made the orange fabric look brighter and more cheerful.
Design Placement Around the Neckline
For this kurti, the leaf design was traced around the neckline in a curved arrangement. Since the fabric was plain, the neck area became the main focus of the embroidery.
The leaves were placed on both sides of the neck, following the shape of the neckline. This kind of placement gives a neat border effect and makes the kurti look complete even without any extra embroidery on the rest of the fabric.
I kept the design simple and balanced. The leaf motifs were not overcrowded, so the orange color of the fabric remained visible. This helped the green embroidery stand out beautifully.
The small flowers were added between the leaves to break the plain leaf pattern and give a soft decorative touch. The overall placement made the neckline look elegant, fresh, and suitable for a simple handmade kurti.

Planning the Border and Sleeve Design
The neck embroidery has come out really well, and the green leaf design looks beautiful on the orange fabric. But after finishing the neckline, I felt that the body of the kurti looked very plain.
I did not want to add embroidery all over the body, because that may make the kurti look crowded and heavy. Since the neckline is already the main highlight, I decided to keep the body plain and focus only on the border and sleeves.
I will share once the border and sleeves deigns are competed.
Until then
